2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Review

July 8th, 2022 by

The Corolla nameplate is one of the most respected and best-selling ones in automotive history. It is normally associated with great value for money. Now, while it has always been available as a sedan and a hatchback, this year, Toyota introduced a crossover version of it. Known as the Corolla Cross, it shares a lot with the famous sedan/hatch. To find out how good it is, below is the 2022 Corolla Cross review:

Features

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross represents the 1st generation of Toyota’s new compact crossover. This vehicle is capable of seating up to 5 occupants and its line-up includes 3 trims with a single engine option offered. It shares many aspects with the standard Corolla car such as its engine and interior.

Engine and Numbers

The 2022 Corolla Cross comes with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine which produces about 169 hp and 150 lb-ft. This power is transmitted to the standard front-wheel drive system via a CVT. If you’re looking for some more oomph when putting your foot down, then an all-wheel drive system is also offered.

As a result of these two setups, the Corolla Cross can achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration time of about 9 seconds. As far as the fuel economy is concerned, the EPA rates it for a maximum average of 31 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drive version is good for 29 mpg city; 32 highway.

Interior and Technology

The Corolla Cross’s interior shares many similarities with the praised interior of the Corolla sedan. However, the cabin is larger (more legroom and headroom) so you have a larger area to move about in. Also, the build quality and the materials used are superb, as expected from Toyota.

The same can be said for the Corolla Cross’s storage area, which is definitely one of its salient features. If the Corolla hatchback’s trunk isn’t adequate for you, then this will be more than enough. Inside, there are many cubbies that can be used to store small items.

2022 RAV4 LE

The basic RAV4 offers a high number of amenities for its low-low price tag. It comes with remote keyless entry, single-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch (analogue) instrument cluster, 6-way adjustability on the driver’s seat, an overhead console, and an electric parking brake.

For the infotainment, you get a 7-inch touchscreen with 6 speakers, connectivity to Android and Apple phones, and USB ports. There are also many standard safety features, including automated emergency braking (w/pedestrian detection), lane departure warning and assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The L trim may be the base model but it offers a lot for the price. The list of standard features includes keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, a 4.2-inch instrumentation cluster, a 7-inch touchscreen with 6 speakers, plus Android, Apple and Amazon Alexa capabilities.

It also comes with an endless list of safety tech as a result of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 package. This includes automated emergency braking w/pedestrian detection, lane departure warning w/steering assist, lane tracing assist, and more.

The LE model focuses more on the luxurious aspects of the Corolla Cross. It adds single zone climate control, push-button ignition, wireless charging, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The infotainment system receives an upgrade as well, increasing the size of the touchscreen to 8 inches.

This trim also adds blind-spot monitoring (w/rear-cross traffic alerts) to the host of safety features.

2022 Corolla Cross XLE

The XLE model is as good as it all gets. Additions to the standard features include dual-zone climate control, SofTex®-trimmed seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and leather trimmings on the steering and shift knob.

The front seats are also upgraded as they are heated and the one for the driver even gets 10-way power adjustability. The enhancements to the safety include a front and rear parking assist system (w/automatic braking).

Exterior and Driving

The 2022 Corolla Cross is one of the most striking and eye-catching vehicles in the crossover category today. You can make it look even better by getting the LE trim which has 17-inch alloy wheels and roof rails for added functionality. The XLE does even better with added 18-inch alloys and DRLs.

The Corolla Cross is available in the following colors:

  • Celestite
  • Wind Chill Pearl
  • Cypress
  • Barcelona Red Metallic
  • Sonic Silver
  • Jet Black
  • Blue Crush Metallic

Before buying one, ensure that the color of your choice is available on your trim.

With all that being said, how does it drive? Well, the Corolla Cross comes with a great driving position and is very comfortable to drive. In fact, its superb comfort levels are responsible for a large fraction of its sales. You also won’t be complaining about hearing any engine noises in the cabin.

But how good is it as an offroader then? Well, if you’re interested in that sort of thing, all-wheel drive is recommended on this vehicle, as it also makes it more capable for off-tarmac driving.

Reliability and Warranty

So, how reliable is the Corolla Cross? Well, it hasn’t been rated for its predicted reliability by JD Power. Nonetheless, it is based heavily on the regular Corolla which has been given 85 out of 100, a Great rating. Consumer Reports have also praised it, calling it “sensible” and they’ve put it in their top 5 list.

The 2022 Corolla Cross gets excellent aftersales like all the other Toyota models today. It has Toyota’s limited warranty which covers it for 3 years/36k miles. The powertrain warranty is good for 5 years/60k miles. As a bonus, Toyota will provide you with complimentary maintenance for 2 years/25k miles.

Verdict

So, this was the 2022 Corolla Cross review. The Corolla Cross has proven to be a great offering for those who want a bigger version of the already established Corolla. It manages to provide all the great value that the regular Corolla does, with some add-ons like more cabin and storage space.

The fuel economy is great for its category and the list of features is endless. The host of driver’s assistance goodies are available in all of the trims. And yes, the Cross is also a looker so it should stand out in traffic.

To sum it up, if you like the Corolla and are a fan of crossovers, this vehicle is the one for you.
