2023 Toyota 4Runner Limited Review
Off-roading has come a long way thanks to the advancements in technology, but consumers still look forward to old-school dirt eating SUVs.
The Toyota 4Runner has offered the best of both worlds with its rugged attributes combined with many modern touches.
The new 4Runner 2023 is a prime example of this, as its happy place is off tarmac, but it can also be used as a comfortable and well-equipped daily driver in the city. The 4Runner has a reputation for holding its own against any modern SUV when it comes to capabilities.
The following is a look at one of its most popular trim levels, the 2023 4Runner Limited:
The Toyota 4Runner is currently in its 5th generation as it turns 40 this year. The Limited variant is one of the 8 trims offered on it and is the second-highest one. It comes with the same power train as all the other models but has several luxurious characteristics.
Thanks to the Toyota Sensing package, you also get a long list of standard safety features. As far as updates are concerned, there are no changes to it this year. But last year saw the addition of a heated steering wheel to the list of standard features.
Powertrain and Numbers
The 4Runner Limited 2023 will come with a 4-liter V6 engine under its hood. Good for 270 hp and 278 lb-ft, it’s an old-school engine with a never say die attitude. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but you can opt for all-wheel drive. Everything is connected via a 5-speed automatic.
The result is that the 4Runner Limited will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in about 7ish seconds, not bad for a traditional off-roading beast. With this acceleration also comes a respectable towing capacity of 5000 lbs. in case you want to go trailering.
Despite its relatively large engine, the EPA states that the 4Runner 2023 is good for 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. It should be noted that testers such as Car and Driver have been able to exceed the highway rating by 3 mpg.
Interior and Technology
The 4Runner may be a rugged vehicle meant for trailblazing, but Toyota doesn’t hold back on the build quality. The 2023 4Runner Limited is the most sophisticated of the bunch as you’ll see many high-quality materials in the cabin. The design is not flashy, and the cabin is easily cleanable.
There’s a lot of room for all five occupants of this vehicle. The interior cubby storage is plenty, and the size of the trunk is decent. You can up the ante by opting for the sliding rear cargo deck (w/under-floor storage compartment) to increase stowage.
You get perforated leather seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. The standard technology offered is astounding. There’s dual-zone climate control, push-button ignition, keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel, and a moonroof.
The driver’s seat is 8-way power adjustable while the front passenger seat is 4-way power adjustable; both are heated. For infotainment, there’s an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It’s complemented well by a premium 15-speaker JBL sound system.
For safety, there’s forward-collision warning (w/automated emergency braking), lane-departure warning (w/lane-keeping assist), blind-spot monitoring (w/rear cross-traffic alerts) and adaptive cruise control. You also get a panoramic view monitor for additional visibility.
Exterior and Driving
The 2023 4Runner Limited is a handsome vehicle for modern times. It comes equipped with niceties such as LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights, heated side mirrors, chrome handles, a powered rear-liftgate window, and stylish 20-inch alloy wheels.
But no, this isn’t some toned-down version of the 2023 4Runner because of these offers. Toyota makes this very clear by including skid plates for underside protection in case you encounter any rough terrain.
The exterior colors offered on the 4Runner Limited 2023 are the following:
- Midnight Black Metallic
- Nautical Blue Metallic
- Magnetic Gray Metallic
- Barcelona Red Metallic
- Classic Silver Metallic
- Blizzard Pearl
The 4Runner Limited drives well thanks to its smooth engine and transmission. The ride is also a comfortable one and Toyota adds sport re-enhancement suspension to improve functionality. The highlight of any 4Runner model is its off-roading prowess, where it is in a league of its own.
The extra bells and whistles offered on the Limited model inside the cabin should make going off-road an even more pleasant experience for its occupants.
Reliability and Warranty
All the 2023 4Runner models have received a score of 87 out of 100 in predicted reliability by JD Power, plus a position atop its best upper midsize SUV list for 2023. Consumer Reports also expects them to be more reliable than its peers. Its current owners also have great things to say.
For coverage, you get a Limited warranty of 3 years/36k miles and a powertrain warranty of 5 years/60k miles. Toyota is also one of the very few manufacturers to hand out complimentary maintenance for 2 years/25k miles.
The 2023 4Runner Limited is more than just a homage to the rugged off-road SUVs of the olden days. It is a very capable vehicle that can accelerate well – on and off-tarmac – offers a lot of towing prowess and provides reasonable fuel economy numbers based on its engine.
The drivability of this vehicle is decent as you do not make any compromises on comfort, but you can tackle anything that the great outdoors can throw at you. On the inside, the cabin is spacious and cargo-friendly, while all the occupants have plenty of room.
The materials and technology offered are more than what most trailblazers need but they do give a plusher vibe inside the cabin. The infotainment system is top-notch and there’s a lot of driver assistance offered. Lastly, it is a reliable one with complimentary maintenance offered.
