Toyota is known for being a leader in innovation and its bZ4X model is a testament to this. The all-new 2023 bZ4X is an all-electric compact crossover SUV that is going to be a gamechanger in the ever-changing world of EVs.

It is the very first of the several bZ models that are going to electrify the company’s lineup by 2025. To see if it is a credible proof of concept for the future, the following is a review of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X and its highlights:

Features

The Toyota bZ4X is currently in its first generation that was introduced in 2022 for the 2023 model year. This SUV offers two trim levels and two powertrains. The key points are the unique styling, zero emissions, and lots of standard features.

Powertrain and Numbers

The 2023 bZ4X offers you a pair of powertrain options to choose from. The standard setup is a single-motor configuration that’s good for 201 hp and 196 lb-ft. You can also upgrade to a dual-motor option that makes 214 hp and 248 lb-ft.

The former offers front-wheel drive while the latter upgrades to all-wheel drive. The power is sent to either drivetrain via a direct-drive transmission. The result is that the bZ4X 2023 takes just 6ish seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph. You can expect to tow up to 1500 lbs with it.

But of course, the juiciest part is the all-electric range. It goes up to 252 miles if you pick the XLE model with FWD. Opting for the Limited trim drops this to 242 miles. The XLE with AWD is up next with 228 miles, followed by the Limited with AWD at 222 miles.

All are respectable numbers for the class. You can achieve 80 percent battery charging from 0 in just about an hour with DC fast charging. Meanwhile a Level 2 charger should charge the battery completely in nine hours.

Interior and Technology

As indicated by its ultra-modern exterior, the new Toyota bZ4X 2023 has a futuristic design that looks very clean. The material quality and build quality are solid, as you’d expect from a Toyota. There are soft touch surfaces everywhere for that premium feel.

Everything is very ergonomically designed, and you get ample room and support for all five occupants. The trunk is boxy, and its size is pretty decent. Also, there’s a lot of cubby storage including the open stowage space beneath the wide center console.

The following are the trim levels of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X:

The bZ4X drives well and has been praised for its acceleration capabilities and the instant power delivery of the powertrain. Despite its aggressive looks, the bZ4X is friendly to drive and it feels very controlled on turns.

As it is an SUV, the 2023 bZ4X does have some off-road characteristics. While a Snow Mode is standard for all the models, if you opt for the all-wheel drive variant, you’ll get the X-MODE drive mode with Snow/Dirt, Deep Snow/Mud and Grip Control modes.

Reliability and Warranty

Unfortunately, the 2023 bZ4X has not been rated for reliability by JD Power yet. Consumer Reports hasn’t written about it in this aspect either as there’s not enough data available. Still, the reviews from actual owners of this car are positive.

You also get a lot of coverage which includes a limited warranty of 3 years/36k miles, a powertrain components warranty of 5 years/60k miles, and an electric components warranty of 8 years/100k miles. Toyota offers you complimentary maintenance for 2 years/25k miles as well.

Verdict

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is more than just a fashion statement, it is proof that Toyota can excel in any genre of vehicles. Yes, it looks apart and can drive very well. But it also has it all from quick acceleration and a respectable all-electric range to a cabin packed with features and built to last generations. If you want an EV, this is an investment that certainly won’t disappoint.
