2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review

January 11th, 2023 by

The Toyota Corolla is easily the most successful car of all time. It holds the record for the best sales figures on the planet and has created an impact like none of its rivals have. The journey has taken almost half a century, and it has done this in both sedan and hatchback forms. The following is a review of the latter, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback:

Features

The 2023 Corolla hatchback is a continuation of the 12th generation of Toyota’s compact hot hatch. Three trim levels are available for this car and there’s a single engine offered on it. All the models are well-equipped for their price tags.

As far as the differences are concerned, this year’s model sees some changes to the exterior in terms of the lights, the front grille, and more. We’ve also seen a number of different adjustments to the car’s trim levels.

Powertrain and Numbers

The 2023 Corolla hatchback features a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 169 hp and 151 lb-ft. It is mated to a CVT gearbox that sends power to a front-wheel drive system. The acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph is around 8 seconds.

This is a pretty good figure for the class, but the fuel economy is even better. According to the EPA, the Corolla hatchback can do up to 32 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

If you opt for the 2023 Corolla Hybrid, you can get even better fuel economy. Based on the EPA’s estimates, it can do up to 50 mpg in the city and 43 on the highway.

Interior and Technology

The cabin of the 2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback and the 2023 Corolla Sedan has been handsomely designed. The quality of materials used is top-notch and there’s a lot of comfort. Doesn’t matter how tall you are, headroom shouldn’t be an issue.

The storage abilities of this car are also quite decent for the category. This applies to both the cubby storage and the trunk. The rear seats can fold down to increase the cargo area. You can also tick Enhanced Cargo Space on the options list for some extra cubes.

The following shows the most important standard features on each trim:

2023 Corolla Hatchback LE

The LE is the entry point to the Corolla hatchback and it does quite well in terms of features. You get automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a 4.2-inch instrumentation cluster. The driver’s seat receives 6-way adjustability while the front passenger seat gets 4.

An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is also standard. It comes with a 6-speaker stereo and compatibility with Android and Apple devices. Power outlets are available for the enhanced connectivity of some portable devices.

The safety department is generously equipped. Forward-collision warning (w/automated emergency braking), lane-departure warning (w/lane-keeping assist), a backup camera, and adaptive cruise control are some of its highlights.

2023 Corolla Hatchback SE

The 2023 Corolla SE offers some interesting add-ons. It comes with sport fabric-trimmed seats, metallic interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and push-button ignition.

2023 Corolla Hatchback XSE

The XSE is where the 2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback becomes a lot more sophisticated and sporty-looking. The seats are SofTex-trimmed and the front ones are heated. Also, the driver’s side gets 8-way powered adjustability. But the seating isn’t the only upgrade here.

The instrumentation screen is larger, at 7 inches, and the stereo is now a JBL 8-speaker audio system. On top of that, the car now has dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad for your phone, and a digital instrumentation gauge cluster.

Blind-spot monitoring (w/rear cross-traffic alerts) is now a standard feature as well.

Exterior and Driving

The 2023 Corolla hatchback is one of the most stylish hot hatches on the market today. The SE and XSE models add some sporty credentials to the exterior such as a mesh grille, a rear spoiler, and a set of 18-inch alloys with a graphite finish.

The colors available on the 2023 Camry are:

  • Ruby Flare Pearl
  • Ice Cap
  • Wind Chill Pearl
  • Celestite
  • Classic Silver Metallic
  • Midnight Black Metallic
  • Underground
  • Blueprint
  • Blue Crush Metallic
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic
  • Finish Line Red
  • Inferno

Do make sure that the color of your choice is available for your trim though.

The 2023 Corolla is known to be a great driver’s car and this applies to the hatchback model as well. The car is quite agile and should be fun to cruise around in. It is also mindbogglingly comfortable as the ride is noise-free and smooth.

The new track-tearing GR Corolla is also based on the hatchback for a reason.

Reliability and Warranty

The 2023 Corolla has gotten a reliability rating of 85 out of 100 from JD Power. This puts it in the Great category. Consumer Reports also expects this car to be more reliable than average. The online reviews from its buyers are also positive in this regard.

Of course, your purchase will be backed by two warranties. The limited one covers you for 3 years/36k miles while the powertrain one is good for 5 years/60k miles. Toyota is also one of the select few manufacturers to offer complimentary maintenance for 2 years/24k miles.

If you get the 2023 Corolla Hybrid, Toyota will give you a separate warranty for the batteries and the other hybrid components as well.

Verdict

As evident from the praises above, the 2023 Corolla Hatchback should be a no-brainer if you want a reliable and comfortable car with lots of amenities. It is also fun to drive and should be quite functional when you need it to be.

There’s nothing dull about it and it is also great to look at like a hot hatch should be. Like all of its ancestors, this is quite the car for the low-low price that it is offered.
