The Toyota Highlander is always a solid option whenever one’s shopping for the midsized SUV category. It is known for being a modern, practical and comfortable CUV that has Toyota’s stamp of reliability on it. The 2023 Highlander is out and it too seeks to fulfill these characteristics. The following is a 2023 Toyota Highlander review:

Features

The 2023 Highlander is part of the 4th generation of Toyota’s mid-range CUV. There are 6 trim levels, all of which are excellently equipped. The highlight this year is the new turbocharged 4-cylinder that replaces the older V6. There’s also the 2023 Highlander Hybrid which is sold separately here.

Engine and Numbers

The 2023 Highlander offers you a choice of two engines. The first is the all-new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo that makes an excellent 265 hp and 310 lb-ft. The second one is a 2.5-liter hybrid engine.

The engine pairs up with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The power is sent to either a front- or an all-wheel drive system, depending on what you opt for. The 0-60 mph time is quite respectable, at around 7 seconds.

The Highlander does well for its powertrain. It gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. If you want to save more fuel, the hybrid model does an even better job at 36 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway.

Interior and Technology

On the inside, the 2023 Highlander is as stylish, comfortable, quiet, and well-built as it gets. It can seat up to 8 occupants (7 if you opt for the captain chairs), and they’ll all have a good amount of headroom and legroom.

The Highlander is very generous when it comes to storing stuff. The interior storage areas will be more than adequate for you. The trunk space is also one of the best in the class, despite this being a three-row seater.

The following covers all the best standard features in each trim:

2023 Highlander L

Even on the entry-level L trim, the 2023 Highlander offers quite a bit of value. Standard features include three-zone climate control, push-button ignition, keyless entry, a 7-inch instrumentation screen, 8-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat and a soft-touch in-dash split-level shelf.

The infotainment system is an 8-inch touchscreen that is compatible with Android and Apple devices. It is connected to a 6-speaker stereo, and there is a handful of USB ports for your multimedia devices.

The standard safety equipment is top-notch thanks to the Toyota Sensing package. Along with a backup camera, you get automated emergency braking (w/pedestrian detection), blind-spot monitoring (w/rear-cross-traffic alert), and lane-departure warning (w/lane-keeping assist).

2023 Highlander LE

The LE trim level adds some niceties such as a leather-wrapped shift knob, blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alerts, and some stuff on the exterior.

2023 Highlander XLE

The XLE is even more interesting since it brings about SofTex-trimmed front- and second-row seats, with the front ones being heated. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable while the front passenger seat is 8-way power-adjustable.

You also get captain’s chairs in the back which are much comfier. There’s also an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless charging for your phone, and a powered moonroof.

2023 Highlander XSE

The 2023 Highlander XSE adds some more standard features such as ambient lighting and it makes several changes to the exterior. Also, you get more options to choose from.

2023 Highlander Limited

The luxurious Limited trim level is simply out of this world as it adds acoustic noise-reducing windows upfront, a higher-end wooden trim to the dash, and leather-trimmed seats and shift knob. The front seats are now heated and ventilated, and the instrumentation display is larger.

You also get a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen that’s connected to an 11-speaker upgraded premium sound system from JBL. The safety department gets front and rear parking assist with automatic braking.

2023 Highlander Platinum

So, what does the top trim offer? Well, along with all the standard features mentioned above, the Highlander Platinum gets you a heated second row of seats, a head-up display, a panoramic view monitor, and lots of more goodies.

Exterior and Driving

TOn the outside, the 2023 Highlander is one of the most stylish vehicles in the midsized category, which is also a reason for its high sales. You can get alloy rims as big as 20-inches and there are a variety of front grilles and roof rails available to differentiate the trims.

The colors on the 2023 Highlander are:

  • Magnetic Gray Metallic
  • Celestial Gray Metallic
  • Moon Dust
  • Midnight Black Metallic
  • Ruby Flare Pearl
  • Blueprint
  • Wind Chill Pearl
  • Cypress

Ensure that the color you like is available on the trim of your choice though.

The Highlander has always been a sturdy vehicle, but this turbocharged engine has given it a new life. It is much more athletic now and of course, the ride quality is excellent like always. Whether it is cruising or speeding, you get the best of both worlds.

Reliability and Warranty

JD Power hasn’t rated the 2023 Highlander for reliability yet (they gave it a Great rating last year) but Consumer Reports have given it a favorable review. You get stellar aftersales from Toyota in the form of a limited warranty of 3 years/36k miles, a powertrain warranty of 5 years/60k miles, and complimentary maintenance for 2 years/25k miles.

Verdict

With that, we end the 2023 Toyota Highlander on a very positive note. This is clearly a consumer favorite for a variety of reasons such as its comfort, space, amenities, looks and now, a spectacular engine that is efficient and powerful.

The safety features are also very valuable and you get most of them as standard. Combine all of the above with a great predicted reliability and you’ve got an irrefusable offer. We can count on the 2023 Highlander to be one of the leaders in the midsized SUV class for the coming year.
