Back to School Maintenance Checklist

When the end of summer rolls around, it’s time to start planning for the new school year. For many parents, that means getting their cars serviced, so they can safely transport their kids to and from school. Leading up to the new school year, there are multiple car components that need to be inspected, replaced, or repaired. The service center at Performance Toyota Bountiful can help get your family’s car ready with end-of-summer service.
Air Conditioning
Chances are you’ve been using the air conditioner throughout the summer. It’s a good idea to make sure it’s working properly, especially as Utah remains warm well into September. When you bring your vehicle to our service center, we’ll check for issues like strange noises, lack of cold air, a worn AC belt, and low refrigerant levels.
Fluids
Back-to-school time is when you want to top up the following fluids if needed:
- Engine Oil
- Brake Fluid
- Transmission Fluid
- Power-Steering Fluid
Engine Cooling System
Another important fluid to have checked at the end of summer is the coolant. We’ll check both the coolant level and its chemical concentration. Coolant is just one part of your car’s cooling system, though. We’ll also check the radiator and hoses for any signs of wear and tear. In general, cooling systems work to keep engines at around 200 degrees F. If you’ve noticed any signs of overheating, schedule an appointment right away!
Brakes
Your car’s brake system withstands a lot of mechanical stress, regardless of the time of year. When the temperature changes from hot to cold, the brake pads in particular can suffer. The rotors and drums can also develop cracks, which can cause brake issues and failure. Our Toyota service technicians will closely inspect your car’s brake system for any signs of wear and tear and replace components as needed.
Battery
Extreme temperatures can put a lot of strain on a car battery. While we’re inspecting the other components of your car, we’ll also check your car battery, including the posts and connections. We’ll tighten the connections if necessary and scrub away any corrosion that might have built up since you last had the battery checked. Another important item to check off the list is the battery fluid level. If the fluid level is low, we’ll top it off so the battery is ready to start up during harsh Utah winters.
Tires
Many Utah drivers alternate between two sets of tires: summer tires (or all-season tires) and winter tires. Summer or all-season tires are usually equipped around April, and are switched out for snow and winter tires around mid-October. The start of a new school year is a busy time, so it’s important to make sure your tires are in great shape for the remainder of summer and into fall. Our Toyota tire center will make sure your vehicle is equipped with the right set of tires for your model.
